Investing in the Future

At Journal Graphics, we measure our success in our environmental stewardship and social responsibility. We want to ensure that we are making life better for those who live, work, and play in our community. It means making the right choices.

FY24 Journal Graphics Sustainability Report

Pre Press Production:

  • In 2021, Journal Graphics switched to a new printing plate that does not require water for processing, saving gallons of water each day.

  • By utilizing Agfa’s ThermalFuse CTP system and ECO3’s Adamas printing plates, virtually all chemicals are eliminated from the plate making process. Chemicals are replaced with a gumming solution that eliminates the need for rinse water. The result is decreased production waste, and less disposal of hazardous waste.

Paper:

  • Our regional paper mill relationships help reduce the environmental impact of long-distance transit by diesel trucks. Approximately 50% of our paper is sourced from the west coast near Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

  • Paper sourced from more distant paper mills is shipped by rail, significantly reducing the amount of fossil fuel used in transport.

  • 100% of all Journal Graphics paper waste created through press and bindery production is recycled through a partnership with International Paper.

Press Production:

  • Journal Graphics utilizes an “energy positive” Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer system on our heat-set web presses. Recognized for efficiency by the Oregon Department of Energy, this system is up to 99% efficient while consuming 50% less natural gas than conventional systems.

  • Our Carrier water-cooled screw chilling system with cooling tower provides free cooling to press production equipment when outdoor temperatures are under 50 degrees Fahrenheit, saving approximately 426,000 kWh annually over the previous conventional system, based on data from the Oregon Department of Energy.

  • Soy based inks are environment-friendly from soybean oil. These inks release approximately 25% VOC emission, less comparatively then solvent-based ink. The printing ink used at Journal Graphics contains soy.

  • Press towels, inks and solvents are recycled.
